Petrus Remodels Distribution Chain
Chateau Petrus recently announced the revision of the distribution of their elite luxury wine. As one of the most highly regarded wines in the world, this move is sure to have industry analysts on high alert.
Chateau Petrus is amongst the cream of the crop in the world of fine wines. Although wines from the appellation of Pomerol are not classified, Petrus is ranked as a first growth wine, consistently commanding jaw-dropping prices; the Petrus 1982 is currently valued at around 60,000 € per case of 12 bottles (May 2013).
Chateau Petrus is currently under the ownership of Jean-Francois Moueix and family, and according to recent developments, this esteemed Pomerol winery has decided to appoint an exclusive, solitary distributor for their in-demand wines.
The company soon to be handling all distribution for Petrus is yet unnamed, but will employ none other than Christophe Jacquemin Sablon to head the operation. Previously the commercial director for Ets JP Moueix, as well as Louis Roederer Champagnes, his past experience and knowledge of the industry speaks for itself.
When asked about the impending refinement to their distribution chain, Jacquemin Sablon had these words for Decanter.com. “We want to identify where Pétrus will be best to be sold, to ensure that customers are able to get hold of it, and to drink it. We don’t want it concentrated in a few hands.”
It seems Petrus is taking the distribution of their premier fine wine into their own hands; drawing parallels with Chateau Latour who withdrew from the “en primeur” system, to regain control of the release of their wines. With more and more top Chateaux in the industry taking matters into their own hands, this may be an indication as to the ever increasing demand for these luxury products. Whether further chateaux will jump on the bandwagon, and what the industry reaction and repercussions of this bold move will be – only time will tell.
