Ausone 1985

Chateau Ausone

34 years

A major disappointment, this wine continues to dry out, showing light body, high tannin, a weedy, red currant fruitiness, and a pinched, abrasive finish. It has gotten worse as it has aged in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: now. Last tasted, 11/99. *** I have never been impressed with this wine, which continues to muddle along, revealing little concentration, interest, complexity, or flavor dimension. The light ruby/garnet color displays some amber at the edge. The uninspiring nose offers dusty aromas of dried fruits, earth, and spice. This light to medium-bodied wine still possesses moderately high tannin, shallow fruitiness, and a tart, astringent finish. It is a strong candidate for drying out before the tannin fades away. Anticipated maturity: now-2008. Last tasted 11/97.

Chateau Ausone

Chateau Ausone is a Bordeaux wine estate from the Saint Emilion appellation, situated in the Saint Emilion region in Bordeaux, France. It is one of only four wines, alongside Chateau Angelus, Cheval Blanc and Pavie to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classe (A) in the Saint-Emilion classification for wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank of France’s Bordeaux wine region. The winery also produces a second wine named Chapelle d’Ausone.

Many claim the high quality wine originating from the Chateau is due to the soil composition in the area, a blend of sand and clay residing on limestone which is unique to the area. Due to the smaller nature of this vineyard (a total of 7 hectares), the entire harvest can be picked over the course of two afternoons.
