Ausone 1994

Chateau Ausone

23 years

Medium deep ruby-colored, with a noticeably vanillin, stony minerality, this austere, medium-bodied wine possesses more ripeness and depth of fruit than the 1993, but it still comes across as undersized and unimpressive. Give it 5-7 years to see if there is any substance behind the abrasive tannin. *** I was more impressed with the 1994 Ausone last year. Less exciting this year, it reveals a medium ruby color, a mineral-dominated, spicy, redcurrant-scented nose, light tannin, good rather than impressive depth, and a tight, nicely-structured, spicy finish. Of course, Ausone never fully reveals itself until it is 15-25 years old, so perhaps there is more here than meets the palate. It will need at least 5 years of cellaring and should keep for 2 decades. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

Chateau Ausone

Chateau Ausone is a Bordeaux wine estate from the Saint Emilion appellation, situated in the Saint Emilion region in Bordeaux, France. It is one of only four wines, alongside Chateau Angelus, Cheval Blanc and Pavie to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classe (A) in the Saint-Emilion classification for wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank of France’s Bordeaux wine region. The winery also produces a second wine named Chapelle d’Ausone.

Many claim the high quality wine originating from the Chateau is due to the soil composition in the area, a blend of sand and clay residing on limestone which is unique to the area. Due to the smaller nature of this vineyard (a total of 7 hectares), the entire harvest can be picked over the course of two afternoons.
