Pichon Baron 2002

Chateau Pichon

15 years

This is an elegant, deep ruby-colored wine with notes of sweet cassis, cedar wood, and tobacco with a hint of chocolate in the background. It is a layered, moderately weighty wine with pretty, even understated fruit flavors, excellent concentration, and a long finish with relatively ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016. *** This is not one of this estate’s most inspiring efforts. Nevertheless, it is a potentially outstanding wine ... if everything comes together. Surprisingly aromatic and evolved, it offers notes of black fruits, underbrush, toasty oak, and a hint of mocha. Soft and fleshy, with medium body as well as outstanding purity, but not the power, density, or concentration expected, it is a very fine effort that falls behind such recent vintages as 2001 and 2000. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2014
